I'm new to Ms. Green's books. I really enjoyed The Amethyst Box, so thought I'd read this next. It was OK. The plot had many good elements to it. The characters were fleshed out really well. Ms. Green has a very nice writing style. And the story moved at a brisk, exciting pace. But several things got in the way of me having a 5-star experience with Agatha Webb. First, I didn't like Agatha or a few other characters at all. Yuk. Second, I'm all for honor and wish our society still embraced its concept, but this book contained several actions done in the name of honor that benefited no one and instead hurt folks! I'm sorry Ms. Green, but your concept of honor in this book is so extreme it has escaped itself and fallen into the pit of self-righteous pride. Also, the ending to this book was unbelievable and somewhat disgusting. If you're a Ms. Green fan, you may enjoy this book. If you're a little fussy about your choice of reading material in the little free time we have to indulge, then I'd pass on Agatha Webb.Product details

Pages estimated. She is credited with being the mother of the mystery novel, as Poe is credited with being the father of the mystery novel.
Set in small town Massachusetts in the 1890s. A well loved and wealthy woman dies from a stab wound from a dagger. At the same time, a servant dies of a heart attack, apparently brought on by the excitement of her mistress dying from the dagger wound. Everything is not as it seems however. There are a plethora of characters who have know each other for years. it includes once wealthy brothers, one of who was the suitor of the woman who died many years ago. Many plot twists and turns. Not really to my taste, but I did finish the book and found it enjoyable. It holds up well for being over one hundred years old.
I enjoyed this book
Interesting, dynamic, developing characters, exciting plot twists, and it's free! Green predated Arthur Conan Doyle, and in my opinion, her work is much better! Did I mention it's free?!
This is one of the best novels I've read by Ms Green. It was a wonderful read. I confess I cried through the last 4 chapters.
Not as tedious as some other works by Anna Katharine Green. While it also wasn't as amusing, it was a good story and kept me up late reading. I was surprised the whole way through. One of her best.
It's surprising, got to get through the first pages before one gets a better insight in the story, but then a world opens up and unexpected changes become surprisingly addictive to read on and on. Yet at some point it got me bored and I had to skip a few pages, but other than that it's okay and has a totally unexpected ending which obviously is good -)
This was an entertaining mystery that I was able to get through with little boredom and was left guessing until near the end. The ending, however, was a little unbelievable. Thus why I only gave it three stars.
